Thanks to everyone who came to our community town hall last Saturday at Will Hampton Library. We had a great discussion, and we look forward to incorporating the feedback into our policy platform.
Our town hall event made the front page of this week’s Oak Hill Gazette:
City Council Candidate Bill Spelman held the first of three planned community town hall meetings in Oak Hill on Saturday at the Will Hampton Library. More than 30 people attended the meeting to discuss the topics, “Neighborhoods, Public Participation and Open Government”. Unlike most town hall style meetings in which the candidate gives a speech and then answers questions from the audience, Spelman’s campaign designed this meeting to get actual policy input from citizens, the best of which, Spelman hopes to incorporate into his policy proposals. This moderated discussion format was a technique used by the Obama campaign and the Travis County Democratic Party’s (TCDP) coordinated campaign in the last election, but David Kobierowski, who moderated this town hall as well as those for the TCDP, said this was the first time this concept had been employed by a local candidate. Conversation touched on a variety of topics but was especially impassioned regarding issues of single member districts, improving communication from the city to the citizens and finding ways to equalize the power of neighborhoods relative to that of developers.
